WEINGUT-PHILIPPS-ECKSTEIN (Mosel, Germany)
This tiny 3ha estate in Graache-Schaferei is comprised of the famous Graacher Himmelreich and Dompbropst vineyards. Old vines, low yields and steep, well-drained vineyards are the basic ingredients handed down to Patrick Philipps, when he took the reigns in 1987. His parents began in 1969 and watched Patrick work his way through the various administrative and technical jobs around the weingut. Now he leads his family with one clear intent: to make the Riesling he loves to drink. Patrick knows his vines almost individually and vinifies individual parcels to express their unique soils and conditions. Each wine is remarkably distinct, ranging from the elegance of the basic dry Riesling to the stunning noble late harvest wines. All the work is done by hand, both in and out of the cellar. Stainless steel tanks provide the exact environment for pristine clarity. Patrick has since become internationally recognized for his labors, winning awards and honors around Europe (including Vitner of the Year). It has not corrupted his humble ways however, still working with his family beside him. The work is done with love and as Patrick says, "for the good of the wine!". It is good for us all, if he continues this way.
